The Mad Science offers programs intended to help Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts earn their science related badges.
Our Science Shows and Science Workshops can help the Scouts achieve their rank requirements while sparking their imaginations with fun, interactive and hands-on science.
Mad Science Workshops run about 60 minutes and are designed for children in 1st to 6th grades. (We also offer pre-school workshops that may be of interest to younger Scouts)
Workshops bring a Mad Scientist to your location of choice, and include all supplies and equipment.
Black & Blue Oceans
This workshop introduces Scouts to environmental issues relating to our water system. Through a hands-on approach students explore the effects of, and difficulties in cleaning up oil spills. This lesson provides an opportunity to develop scientific skills through inquiry based instructional methods. It deals with subjects such as absorbents, biodegradation, ecosystem, food chain, marine pollution and surface tension.
This workshop introduces the Scouts to the fundamental concepts of electricity. Students, through hands-on activities, gain a better understanding of electrical circuits and the basic elements of electricity. This workshop covers such subjects as conductors, insulators, electrons, parallel and series circuits, static charges, electrons and atomic structure. This lesson provides an opportunity to develop scientific skills through inquiry based instructional methods.
This workshop provides Scouts with an introduction to geology, including an understanding of the geological formation processes, classification systems, identification methods, and physical properties of rocks and minerals. Hands-on activities encourage students to interact with the concepts presented such as magma, mantle, minerals, scale of hardness and volcanoes. This lesson provides an opportunity to develop scientific skills through inquiry based instructional methods.
Mad Science has already conducted Blue and Gold Banquet Shows for Scout groups in Metro Detroit.
The shows are not only entertaining, they’re educational and deal with requirements of some activity badges and rank requirements. Great fun for any Scouting occasion.
Our "Up, Up and Away" stage show addresses many requirements for science badges and other Scout program requirements. Topics include air pressure, the vortex, Bernoulli’s Principle, states of matter, hot air balloons and hovercrafts. This is a 45 to 60 minute show with volunteer scouts chosen from the audience.
"Fire & Ice" stage show is a highly entertaining show that covers such topics as states of matter, the scientific method, and chemical reactions. This is a 45 to 60 minute show with volunteer scouts chosen from the audience.
